The jubilant Halloween festival at AHS

Halloween is a traditional festival annually celebrated on October 31st. It is considered as one of the funniest and most special festivals of the year, due to the traditions of costumes, candy, parties, games, and pranks. While Halloween began as a Western religious festival, it has now become an annual cultural event celebrated by people worldwide, including in Vietnam. On the days before the festival, houses are decorated with spooky effigies of witches, black cats, pumpkins, ghosts and ore; on Halloween night itself, many people dress up in elaborate costumes and attend parties.

Reflecting this atmosphere of the mysterious and the ghastly common to Halloween festivals around the world, on October 31st 2012, The Asian International School held its own Halloween festival at all of its high school campuses. This traditional festival is held every year with many exciting activities to help the students understand more about different cultures and traditions around the world, develop the students’ creativity and strengthen their collective solidarity.

By the beginning of October, the Halloween atmosphere had pervaded all campuses of The Asian International School. The students took advantage of all their free time to collect and think about the ideas for the contests held during the festival, especially the Halloween-themed painting contest. With skillful hands, they created unique paintings showing their eagerness for the festival, from simple pencil drawings of pumpkins to elaborate graveyard scenes to colorful paintings of the macabre and delightful world of Halloween. All works were exhibited in the schoolyard for all to enjoy.

Pumpkin decoration was one of the activities that attracted many students. Huge and yellow pumpkins suddenly became lanterns, carved with funny smiles and scary demon faces... All of these were used to decorate the various courtyards, making the school grounds festive and colorful before the celebration itself.

The atmosphere of the Halloween festival was made more interesting and scary with the haunted house and graveyard, both created by the students, full of monsters, ghosts, witches, and bats haunted with horrible sound effects and bitter cries. The end result succeeded, making the students both excited and a bit scared. The costumes were impressive and realistic.

In the Halloween festival of this year, the students dressed up as their favorite characters. The majority of them chose horrible costumes and wore terrifying makeup. For example, some students disguised themselves with pale, bloody faces. Others impersonated ferocious wolves. There were also students bearing devil masks, and others the black robes and scythes of Death. Some students preferred to be princesses in disguise. It was interesting that their characters were different from each other. Each character left its own unique impression.

Students on the Halloween Day

Not only did the students enjoy the Halloween makeup, but the teachers also joined in the fun. Mr. Eric Brian disguised himself as a dead body with red hair; Mr. David Munden became a cute pirate; Ms. Precila impersonated a witch; Mr. Teddy and Ms. Abejo appeared as mysterious characters with black shirts.

The festival’s atmosphere became more exciting and lively with the Halloween costume performance. This contest had many criteria by which students were judged, including clothes, performing style and creation. Every class was well-prepared and gave excellent, impressive performances. In their varied costumes, including Death, vampires, ghosts, and princesses, the students were confident and up to the challenge. Some students even combined Gangnam style dancing with their costume performance. There were also humorous and highly educational pantomimes. All of these performances were innovative, fascinating, and creative, and the audience responded with excitement and applause.

In addition, there were fun games for the students to play and work as a team, such as apple eating, lemon passing, mummification, yoghurt eating and Halloween face makeup games.

The festival was tremendous fun for all students and staff, full of laughter, smile, and applause. With our wide variety of extra-curricular activities held regularly during the school year, it is the wish of The Asian International School for our students to learn to be comfortable and have fun in the course of their education. Through these activities, the school develops the potential capacities of each student, helping them gain imagination, self-discipline, creativity, dynamism and the confidence to express themselves. This is one of the goals of The Asian International School in providing the best quality education and training for its beloved students.
